Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: I don't think you will find an easier week to make a pick in a survivor contest than this past one. There were at least three teams that you felt absolutely sure about and two more that you were pretty darn sure about, and they all won easily. There were a couple close calls but they were associated with games that had less then 10 picks on them. Nobody was killed this week but there was one suicide: with all those great games to pick from one misguided soul took the Buffalo Bills, underdogged and on the road in Miami. Losing just the one this week brings 312 survivors moving on to week five.
Survivor 2: The plans to have the second contest extend into the NFL playoffs if necessary have been scraped because there is a glitch in the software that hosts the contest when the contest enters the playoffs. The plan was to allow everyone to take a team twice if the contest moved into the playoffs but the glitch will allow contestants to have the same team throughout the playoffs; so to avoid controversy, the second contest will not extend past week 17. The second contest will however still start in week 6.

Comments

13 3-1-0 Good News Just one team in the league has held a top spot for more than one week and just one first-place team in the league has more VP than the second-place team, and that team is . . . Commish East - well it should be - but the truth is the Lightning's Team of the Week Honors have given them a huge 3VP lead over 2nd, their first weekly winnings, the most VP in the league and have them 1st in conference points 2nd overall.
Pts 519 Bad News None, it's all good again Vincent - oh, well maybe not playing Kevin Smith and his 21 points - sorry Vincent but it really should have been me
Justice 10 3-1-0 Good News After an 0-1 start I feared Dave might make good his threat of legal action against the PFFL entailing some groundless malfeasance, but after three straight wins all is now good in the Justice camp - in the last three weeks they have moved from the bottom tier to the top two
Pts 484 Bad News Rivers on a bye this week and their only backup Stafford may not play - and it's almost impossible to sue the NFL
Commish East 10 3-1-0 Good News Maybe doing it with mirrors but after an 0-1 start also won three in a row to break into the top tier for the first time
Pts 422 Bad News Unless they bring their point total up the mirror could break
TD's

10 2-2-0 Good News What a difference two points can make: down 15 to the Syndicate going into Monday night the TD's had Minnesota's defense left; late in the fourth quarter Green Bay challenges a fumble at their own 1 recovered by Minnesota; they win the challenge and Minnesota doesn't get the ball at the one but what they do get is a safety awarded - yeah that's 2 points and the TD's win 133-132. The difference in winning or losing was 4VP earned instead of 1 and fourth place and the top tier instead of 9th and the bottom
Pts 483 Bad News God knows how Mickey will react to such a devastating loss

Middle Tier

T Bones 9 2-2-0 Good News After the first two weeks they were 2-0, in first and led the entire league in total points
Pts 497 Bad News Then they lost Gore, lost their next 2 and have lost their top tier status - and there is still you know who
Syndicate 8 2-2-0 Good News They had a 100% coaching rating in their 133-132 loss to the TD's so they at least know the loss wasn't on them
Pts 500 Bad News A loss this devastating would make a sane man go crazy - I'm afraid to think what it may do to Mickey
Downtowners

8 2-2-0 Good News They can at least take solace in the fact that even if they would have played their other QB they still would have lost but I will stop here because Ron asked if he could write his own Good and Bad this week and I mirthfully oblige:

Ron's Good: "after week 5 the bye weeks for most major players will be behind us"
Pts 486 Bad News Ron's Bad: "too bad Garrard lost the coin flip between him and Sanchez for week 4 starting QB"

Now if everyone would do this it would make my job a lot easier
Darrlys 8 2-2-0 Good News Won their game with just 97 points keeping them above the cut line
Pts 436 Bad News Were in the bottom three in scoring meaning they got just 2VP in the win

Bottom Tier

Legion of Doom 6 1-3-0 Good News Made no mistakes in their loss - a 100% rating and they still would have lost - are still one win and 2VP from the middle tier
Pts 454 Bad News LT is killing them
Aggravators 4 1-3-0 Good News Last week I said Drew Brees getting just 8 points was a fluke and I was right - this week he got 9, told ya
Pts 361 Bad News I'm sure Brees' last two weeks of 8 and 9 points have a lot to do with it but they have the lowest efficiency rating in league of 67.2 - the only team below 70%
Twisted Helmets 1 0-4-0 Good News Got 36 points out of San Francisco's defense
Pts 418 Bad News Got just 51 out of the other 8

Comments

11 3-1-0 Good News David Garrard came through big time (31 pts) to beat the Stoggies 108-104 and McNabb is due back this week - after an 0-1 start in the bottom tier they have risen from the ashes with 3 straight wins to sit on top of the conference not only in the standings but also total points - Kevin does your good fortune ever end?
Pts 490 Bad News Lets see: an incredibly lucky 1pt win last week; their backup QB gets them 31 this week and they win by 4; all their injured players are now healthy; they're in first plave; Kevin is loaded - uh, I guess no bad news here
Reno 11 3-1-0 Good News Thanks to San Fran's defensive 36 point explosion they recovered from last week's 65-point lowlight to back in the realm of the elite of the top two - and it looks like they finally know how to place an icon for their team; I take it that's either Jack when he was little or your dog
Pts 459 Bad News San Fran's defense bailed them out this week but Gore's absence still a concern
JR-s Boys 9 3-1-0 Good News Are dead last in conference points 29th overall but 3-1 and in 3rd place - what are you John a magician? Actually had 2 of their first 3 picks on a bye this week and only lost by 9 and it was just their first loss
Pts 413 Bad News Back to back sub 100-point weeks have them in the cellar in conference points so a loss this week could plummet them in the standings
Pretty Kitty Central 9 2-2-0 Good News Won a nail-biter on Monday night 120-118 to even their record and lift them back into the top tier - were up 16 to Little Johnny's on Monday who had Ryan Grant left but Grant came up with just 14
Pts 454 Bad News Picked up LT in a trade and it almost cost them this game

Middle Tier

TnT 8 2-2-0 Good News AP didn't go wild on Monday night but he got more than enough to beat the JR's Boys 101-92 to even their record at 2-2 - they move up one spot in the standings with the win putting them in their best position of the year in 5th
Pts 458 Bad News They actually scored in the bottom 3 for the week giving them just 2VP for the win which prevented them from breaking into the top tier
SS Stoggies 8 2-2-0 Good News Nothing good about this week at all except they are not in the bottom tier
Pts 445 Bad News Brees throwing up another dud killed them but they still had a chance on Monday night with Crosby against Jennings down just 3 because Jennings put up just 6, but Crosby's 5 ended that - their 3-game reign in the top four ends with the loss and with Brees off this week their backup Eli Manning may not play listed as questionable
Weekend Warriors 8 2-2-0 Good News Slipped into the dungeon last week but rebound nicely with a win over the No Names to jump back into the land of the living - and it looks like Westbrook will be back this week
Pts 444 Bad News Philip Rivers off this week and Calvin Johnson got dinged but chances are good Johnson will at least play
Boys of Autumn 8 2-2-0 Good News Berrian and Minnesota's defense came through big time Monday night carrying them over the Aggravators 128-115 and lift them out of obscurity and into clarity
Pts 436 Bad News Have the most points scored against in the league of 519 but maybe it's actually good news since they were able to overcome it with a 2-2 record indicating potential

Bottom Tier

Nasty Aggravators 8 2-2-0 Good News The emergence of Rashard Mendenhall
Pts 436 Bad News They didn't play him
Smiley's Snipers 7 1-3-0 Good News Their 3rd round pick had 21 points
Pts 483 Bad News Didn't play Kevin Smith and his 21 points costing them a 126-122 loss to Reno and consequently this bottom tier address
Little Johnny's 3 0-4-0 Good News Not the only team in the league without a win - yeah I know it doesn't mean much but I had to say something
Pts 433 Bad News Had a chance on Monday night but Ryan Grant fell a couple of points short of giving them their first win

Comments

11 3-1-0 Good News They're in first place; Peyton Manning looks like he should have gone in the first round; their defense scored 36 points this week; they are killing me in our side bet; and they are the defending champions - yeah I hate them
Pts 481 Bad News Manning has a bye in week 6
Knockout Kings 11 2-1-1 Good News Yeah they kissed their sister this week but the potential points belonged to their opponent so they should be well satisfied with a tie - they still earned 3VP but had they lost they would have been out of the top tier all together so second place with a tie looks real good right now
Pts 508 Bad News One more point would have given them the top spot with a 1VP lead but were not going there
Irish Talbots 11 2-1-1 Good News Didn't win but didn't lose either maintaining their 3rd rank position - in reality just 6 points out of second place and have more points than the leader
Pts 502 Bad News I hate to mention it but if they would have accepted a certain trade offer they would be in first place right now - did I say I hated to mention it?
French River 10 3-1-0 Good News Squeaked one out over the average this week to earn their third win and first spot in the top tier this year - and look who they crawled up on
Pts 459 Bad News Harvey's petition to be reinstated as Kevin's partner has gone to arbitration

Middle Tier

Archie's 10 2-2-0 Good News Fell out of the top tier but tied with the fourth team in VP so still in the doorway - and still higher than where they started the year which was 7th
Pts 526 Bad News Had the fire power Monday night to win but Driver and Crosby coming up small had them fall 9 points short
MNE 10 2-2-0 Good News After flirting with the bottom tier they even up their record with a win despite Brees' measly 9 points - actually just 1VP from first
Pts 491 Bad News Brees scoring just 17 points the last two weeks and now has a bye - but maybe that bye is a good thing as Roethlisberger is their backup
J&J 9 3-1-0 Good News Held off Archie's three players on Monday night to claim their third victory and a winning record
Pts 432 Bad News Even with a win didn't move up in the standings
Pretty Kitty West 7 2-2-0 Good News Made no mistakes to speak of; players just had an off week so nothing they could do about it - still above the cut line and not under .500
Pts 436 Bad News Has Gore's backup but not getting near the  production Gore was giving

Bottom Tier

Commish West 5 1-3-0 Good News Not a bad team has just had bad matchups for the most part - at least that's what I'm telling myself
Pts 399 Bad News I'm talking to myself
B&B 4 1-3-0 Good News Billy is a great guy and very successful I might add
Pts 388 Bad News They wouldn't have broken 100 points even with a 100% efficiency rating - LT is killing them
Brookline 2 1-3-0 Good News No longer among the winless teams in the league - didn't play him but Mendenhall's emergence could only help
Pts 355 Bad News Still in the West cellar

PFFL STUFF

The Score: Another below average week makes the first quarter of 2009 the lowest scoring first four weeks in the four years of the current scoring system. This week's 112.7 average has the current yearly average standing at 113.5 - 3.5 lower than the opening average of 117 and the lowest average after the first four weeks in four years. Previously 2006 had the lowest first quarter average of 115 and all three years together averaged 118 after the first four weeks. And if the past is any indication of the future, the scoring should continue on the light side as week 5 has been the lowest scoring week of the past three years with an average of just 110.

The Unconquered: The NFL still has five unbeaten teams but the last of the unbeatens in the PFFL went down this week; leaving no teams without a loss remaining in the league. The head to head competition format started in 1995. This is the first time in the history of head to head competition that there wasn't at least one unbeaten team after four weeks. Parity?

                                           Did You Know Stuff

● There is no team in the 90 percentile in coaching efficiency

● Although there was a tie in the West, the Cardiac Central continues to supply most of the drama in the league with the most close games. This week the conference added one 2pt game, one 3pt game and two 4pt games to its list of nail-bitters. The Central now has had 11 games decided by 4 points or less through the first four weeks compared to just two in the East and three in the West.

● The Philadelphia and San Francisco defenses have both had 30-point weeks this year. There are some bad teams in the NFL.

● The Boys of Autumn still have the most points scored against them in the entire league but despite this misfortune have now won 2 in a row. The coach of the year honor is awarded to the team with the highest efficiency rating but right now Mike at least merits honorary consideration.

● According to NFL rules, a player is eligible to enter the NFL Draft three years after high school.

Regular Season: There are seven regular season games remaining.

PFFL Trivia Answer

Bubba Smith

The inaugural draft shared by both leagues occurred in 1967. Smith was a defensive end out of Michigan State. He was drafted by the Baltimore Colts as number one overall. Bubba played for seven seasons, also as a Raider and Oiler, then retired in 1976.
